Note: This devotional was written in 2017, so the news is out of date but the message is certainly still relevant.
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” – Luke 16:10
If you’re familiar with the name Tim Tebow, then you probably know that his professional football career was short-lived and he’s currently making his way through the ranks of minor league baseball. Recently, Tim was bumped up from a low-A ball club to a high-A team by the decision-makers at the New York Mets management office. This, despite the fact that Tim’s batting numbers are low and his defensive errors are high.
Every year, hundreds of would-be pro athletes fall by the wayside. Those guys who were picked in the last round of the draft, filled out the third string, played in a couple of games, and then were relegated to the practice team or the minor league or joined the coaching staff at some small college. But Tim Tebow continues to stay in the news. Regardless of how poor his averages are, people still want to follow the career of this once-great superstar. The question I have to ask myself is, “Why?!” What’s so special about this guy that he gets to host TV shows and have his minor league baseball career leveraged to “play of the day” status?
I can only come up with one answer. Tim consistently points to Jesus Christ in his interviews and personal interactions. And because Tim is faithful to divert the spotlight to Christ, God continues to allow the spotlight to shine in his direction. God has given us all a platform from which to proclaim the Gospel. Those who are faithful with little will be faithful with much (Luke 16:10). My prayer for Tim Tebow (and other believers on a high pedestal) is that God keeps the spotlight on him as long as he’s faithful to honor Christ Jesus… even if he’s the janitor of the ballpark.
